GOOD MORNING ISCHIA! FRIDAY 17TH JANUARY 2014
Welcome to our Ischia blog, Good Morning Ischia! Here you can see the entry for Friday 17th January 2014.
Good morning Ischia!
Well in truth it's more a case of "Good afternoon/early evening Ischia" as we're all running a bit behind schedule today so apologies for any morning readers who've been kept waiting. At least this way I can tell you what kind of day it's been here rather than how it's going to be. In fact it's felt a lot more like winter today than it has on previous days, temperatures have been similar (maximum of 15° Celcius ((59° fahrenheit)) and a minimum of 9°C ((48°F)) but a slightly stronger wind has added a little chill to the air that wasn't biting quite so hard earlier in the week.
Of course when I say it's felt more like winter I'm talking by Ischian and Southern Italian standards, back home in my own country, England, these temperatures at this time of year would herald street parties and long queues of traffic down to Brighton on the south coast! Having also seen some of the news items from the USA and Canada recently showing the freak cold snaps, it makes me feel that bit warmer and luckier to be here. But anyway, just for the record it's a bit chillier than it's been here recently if still fall short of what can realistically be described as cold.
Today's photo is a shot of the magnificent Castello Aragonese taken from "L'innominato" Restaurant in Ischia Porto where I recently had an excellent pizza and will be hastily revising my restaurant guide to include this underrated gem. From the main dining area you get this very same view of the castle with Mount Vesuvius as the backdrop. The castle is one of the main attractions of the island and to many people its iconic symbol (in fact you'll note our very own logo is largely composed of a green silhouette of the castle).
Standing on a rock roughly 100 metres from the mainland, the castle can be reached via a stone bridge that links it to the town of Ischia Ponte. Visitors can pay €10 for entry and take a walk around the fascinating citadel inside which at one stage was home to thousands of families escaping war and plague in the middle ages. At the main entrance you take an elevator to the heart of the castle's village and you can then enjoy the magnificent views back down to Ischia itself in one direction, across to Capri in another and over to Naples and Mount Vesuvius in the other.
One of the main features of the castle is the ancient cathedral (Cattedrale dell'Assunta) which is a popular setting for couples who want to get married in a unique and romantic setting. The partly ruined cathedral is a classic and special setting for anybody looking to tie the knot in a particularly memorable location with some fantastic photo opportunities along the way.
We've got lots more photos and information about Castello Aragonese on its main page so click above if you'd like to read a little more about it. We can also help couples with their marriage plans so for anybody planning a wedding in Ischia please drop us a line if you'd like us to explain what we can do for you.
Ok that's all from me today, apologies again for the tardiness of the blog and I promise tomorrow's entry will be back in its morning slot.
A domani!
