GOOD MORNING ISCHIA! FRIDAY 25TH OCTOBER 2013
Welcome to our Ischia blog, Good Morning Ischia! Here you can see the entry for Friday 25th October 2013.
Good morning Ischia!
We have a mixture of sun and cloud this morning but we look set for a continued spell of warm weather with temperatures for the next few days hovering around the 24° celcius (76° fahrenheit) mark.
Today's photo is of a "micro-taxi" at O' Vagnitiello Thermal Park in Casamicciola. These fantastic vehicles are usually an Ape (Bee in Italian) truck that has been converted into a taxi with an extra row of seats in the back and a canopy added for cover. The Ape is a vehicle used a lot in Ischia as they are small, nimble and great for getting up and down some of the narrow, twisting streets on the island. You will often see an Ape chugging along filled with fruit or vegetables in the back as they are used to transport local produce down from the mountains to the shops and restaurants.
The micro-taxis are often brightly-coloured and decorated with ribbons or little accessories to make them distinctive from their counterparts. These iconic vehicles have been used as taxis on the island since the very early days of tourism in the 1960's and are in many ways a symbol of Ischia. You'll find them waiting at most of the taxi ranks around the island such as at Castello Aragonese or the ferry & hydrofoil ports at Ischia Porto, Casamicciola and Forio and they really add a wonderful piece of individual character to the island.
Apart from their individual looks, the micro-taxis are also great fun to travel in and a fun way to move around the island, especially if arriving for the first time and you want to have a good look around on the way to your hotel or accommodation. We'll be taking lots of photos of the best micro-taxis for a gallery that we're putting together of the best ones but we would love it if you'd help us with this by sending us your own photos of your favourites.
Ok, however you choose to get around Ischia today, have fun and let us know if you need any help with anything.
Ciao!
