GOOD MORNING ISCHIA! SUNDAY 30TH march 2014
Welcome to our Ischia blog, Good Morning Ischia! Here you can see the entry for Sunday 30th March 2014.
Good Morning Ischia!
It's another gorgeous day here in Ischia with clear blue skies and bright sunshine. Temperatures are on the up too with a maximum of 19° Celcius (67° fahrenheit) for this afternoon dropping to around 14°C (57°F) this evening. The warm weekend weather has brought people out of their homes and hotels with many of those people choosing to hit the beach or in some cases actually entering the sea for what must be a very "refreshing" dip. For the morning and afternoon at least, gone are the jumpers and coats, being replaced by t-shirts, shorts, sandals and summer hats which is great to see!
I personally didn't quite get my choice of clothing right this morning when I was out on the scooter, you really need to add an extra layer to allow for the breeze that flows around you but my overcoat, jumper and t-shirt combo was at least one and possibly two layers too many. Having bought the scooter just before Christmas, today was really the first time I've been able to go out on it in the warm weather and I can't tell you just what a fantastic feeling it was. Having a car in Ischia can be great at times but there are things you can do on a scooter that you probably wouldn't in a car, such as exploring some of the more narrow roads which can reward you with some wonderful scenery and new sights.
This morning I did some exploring around Panza and Sant'Angelo where I found lots of little pathways that I wasn't aware of before which I'll be exploring further on foot over the coming weeks in order to give you all some more ideas for walking routes. Apart from enjoying the aforementioned warm temperatures, the most striking thing about being on the bike today were the beautiful aromas which fill the air in little pockets when riding around. The most dominant of those aromas came from the beautiful violet coloured wisteria or "glicine" in Italian which have a fragrance very similar to the jasmine which we should also be seeing in bloom over the next few weeks.
Speaking of flowers I've chosen another species for today's photo, anybody entering the village of Sant'Angelo today would have seen the bright purple and yellow flowers that grow on the cliff walls on the descent road. These flowers have a variety of names, in Italian they are known as "Unghie di Strega" which translates as "Witches Nails" whilst in English they are known in various quarters as "Ice Plant", "Hottentot" or the rather unjust "Pigface"! These rubbery flowers also known as "Carpobrotus" in Latin, grow rapidly during the spring, eventually covering the whole cliff face in colour and can be found in various places all over the island.
As spring progresses there are a huge variety of plant and flower species that provide a wonderful splash of colour to add to the already beautiful palette provided by the bright green mountains, whitewashed houses and crystal clear blue water in the sea. It was great to see so many people out and about enjoying it all this morning and as we approach Easter there is a noticeable increase in the number of visitors from all over the world, even if the majority of the hotels are yet to open. Best of all today is that we now have an extra hour of sunshine to enjoy in the evenings. As in many European countries, the clocks in Italy went forward this morning so we'll be seeing a beautiful sunset just before 7:30 this evening. Days like these are a real reminder of what a privilege it is to live in such a beautiful part of the world and it's a pleasure to be able to share it with you all.
Anyway that's all from me for today, I'll be back with more later this week but don't forget we're here to help with whatever questions you may have about Ischia so don't be shy in coming forward if there's something you'd like to ask us, no matter what it is. The best way to reach us is via e-mail at info@ischiareview.com whilst we're also available on the phone on (0039) 328 938 9080 or at certain time of the day via the live chat option, just check to see if the "need help" box is highlighted in green and you can chat to us straight away, but if it's grey then it's best to drop us an e-mail.
A presto!
