The Chiesa Maria S.S. Assunta in Cielo was originally built in 1684 before suffering a damaging period in the late nineteenth century. A restoration project in 1880 was swiftly followed by damage from the earthquake in 1881. However, the larger earthquake that hit Casamicciola in 1883 was to prove more decisive, destroying everything but the main façade of the church. Undeterred, the villagers decided once again that the church should be rebuilt and it was restored to its former self in 1886.
To visit the church, head to the town of Lacco Ameno, stopping just short of the main town area along the SS270 road. Take the road which climbs inland and up the hill before reaching a roundabout. Take a left at this roundabout and you will find the church on the left of a small square.
