BUONOPANE
Latest update: 7 May 2022
The village of Buonopane (translates as "Good Bread"!) is a "frazione" of the comune of Barano d'Ischia. It can be found in the southern half of the island between the villages of Fontana to the east and Piedimonte to the west.
The village is famous for the traditional 'Ndrezzata dance which is performed a couple of times each year including at the annual Buonopane in Festa event. The dance is an intricate and complicated display performed by the men of the village and involves a series of manoeuvres including batons that are said to originally derive from the battles that were fought to ward off raiding pirates. |
Buonopane is home to the famous Nitrodi Natural Springs with its rejuvenating and healing water and the village is also the starting point for the Festa della Ginestra which takes place each spring.
How to get to Buonopane:
Buonopane occupies a stretch of the SS270 ring road between Fontana and Piedimonte, making it very simple to find either by private or public transport. If driving, take the SS270 in a clock-wise direction from Ischia Porto and drive for around 20 minutes. From Forio or Sant'Angelo it's best to head anti-clockwise but still along the same road. There are three bus routes that pass through the village, the CS, CD and number 11. From the main towns on the island it's best to take either the CS or CD, the latter of which takes 20 minutes from Ischia Porto. The number 11 bus is mainly used by locals as it covers just a short distance to Serrara and Fontana.
