FLOWERS OF ISCHIA
FLOWERS OF ISCHIA
Ischia is abundant with an array of beautiful flowers throughout the year, here we show you photos and explain which varieties you can find on the island.
With so many beautiful flower varieties all year round we've decided to keep a track of some of the best photos of them. We'll try to keep a month by month log of what's growing on the island so you know exactly what to expect when you visit.
March 2014
Spring is in the air and below are some of the most prominent flowers on display:
Wisteria ("Glicine" in Italian) - Lots of these all over the island now. They are violet in colour and have a beautiful aroma, similar to that of Jasmine.
Ice Plant - Known as "Unghie di Strega" or "Witchnails" in Italy, a creeping plant with thick, rubbery stems. During the spring they produce flowers and you can see a great example of this in Sant'Angelo, as you descend the road into the village you'll see the cliff wall to your left covered in this plant with its purple and yellow flowers.
Rose - Grows beautifully in Ischia and at this time of year well-established plants are already in bloom.
Bird of Paradise/Strelitzia - A favourite in many gardens with their distinctive flower heads that look like tropical birds.
Spanish Broom - Better known as "Ginestra" in Italy. This yellow flowered bush can be found all over the island and in particular on cliff-tops such as Punta Imperatore in Forio.
Calla Lily - Grows well in Ischia and blooms during March. Lots of different colours can be found across the island including the popular white and yellow variety as shown in the photo above.
Tulips - Another favourite in gardens. The bulbs planted during winter produce bright, big flower heads in March and April.
