ISCHIA TO POMPEII
Latest update: 8 May 2023
The Ischia to Pompeii trip can be done in a number of ways with public transport or private excursions available. The Pompeii Archaeological Site is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and is one of the most popular attractions in the Campania region.
Pompeii is situated within the Metropolitan City of Naples province, around 20 kilometres south-east of Naples itself. |

There are three main options for reaching Pompeii from Ischia, detailed as follows:
Option 1 - Ferry or hydrofoil to Naples followed by underground Metro and then train to Pompeii
With this first option you can take one of the ferries or hydrofoils from Ischia to Naples. You can take hydrofoils from any of Ischia Porto, Casamicciola or Forio and arrive at Beverello port in Naples. The hydrofoils are the fastest option with journey times of 50 minutes to an hour, depending on your departure port.
When you get to Naples Beverello port, you can walk across to the Naples Underground Metro station of Municipio which takes around five minutes. From Municipio it's just three stops on Line 1 to Garibaldi which is the underground station for Napoli Stazione Centrale, the main train station in Naples.
Tickets for the Metro cost either €1.50 per person for a single journey, or €4.50 for a daily ticket with unlimited usage.
When you reach Garibaldi station, it's another five minute walk across to the platform from which you can take the train to Pompeii. There are two types of train available: the Circumvesuviana which is the cheapest but stops at more stations and takes longer, or the Campania Express which costs more but is faster by not having so many stops. It's also by and large used only by tourists, making the trains more spacious.
The Circumvesuviana trains take around 36 minutes to reach Pompeii from Napoli Piazza Garibaldi station and cost around €4 per person, stopping at around 20 stations along the way, one of which is for the Herculaneum Archaeological site.
The Campania Express takes slightly less time, around 34 minutes, but only stops at Herculaneum before reaching Pompeii. The tickets for this train cost around €6 per person but are much more comfortable.
Of the two train types, the Circumvesuviana runs more frequently throughout the day, roughly once every 30 minutes, whereas the Campania Express trains are more spread out across the day.
Total price based on two people for a round-trip returning to Ischia the same day:
4 x hydrofoil tickets (€19.40 per person each-way) - €77.60
4 x Naples Metro tickets (€1.50 per person each way) - €6
4 x Campania Express train tickets (€6 per person each way) - €24
Estimated total: €107.60 (doesn't include transport to and from port in Ischia)
Pompeii entry price for 2022: €16 per adult
Option 2 - Hydrofoil to Sorrento followed by train to Pompeii
The next option takes advantage of the hydrofoil between Ischia and Sorrento which runs from around Easter up until the end of October (dates can vary from year to year).
With this option you need to take the 10:45 Alilauro hydrofoil which departs from Ischia Porto and reaches Sorrento at around 12:00. On arrival in Sorrento, it's a case of taking either a taxi or a bus to the train station in Sorrento.
The buses in Sorrento are cheap and cost around €1.50 per person to the station, however the buses can get full, especially after the arrival of a ferry/hydrofoil. A pre-organised taxi from the port to the train station costs around €30 but you may pay slightly less if you can find one waiting at the port.
It takes around half an hour to reach Pompeii by train from Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana and costs around €3 per person, with nine stops along the way. The Campania Express costs €8 per person, stops six times and takes 36 minutes.
Taking this option, you would reach Pompeii around 13:00, the busiest and hottest part of the day. An effective visit of the archaeological site requires at least two hours, meaning you wouldn't make it back to Sorrento in time for the 15:50 hydrofoil to Ischia.
This option really only makes sense if you're not returning to Ischia the same day, with accommodation for that night somewhere on the mainland such as Sorrento or Naples. If you are staying in Ischia that night, you would need to take the train from Pompeii to Naples at the end of your visit, followed by Metro to Beverello port and hydrofoil back to Ischia.
Total price based on two people for a round-trip returning to Ischia the same day:
4 x hydrofoil tickets (€19.40 per person each-way) - €77.60
2 x Naples Metro tickets (€1.50 per person each way) - €3
2 x Campania Express train tickets from Sorrento to Pompeii (€8 per person each way) - €16
2 x Campania Express train tickets from Pompeii to Naples (€6 per person each way) - €12
1 x Taxi from Marina Piccola port in Sorrento to Sorrento train station - €30
Estimated total: €138.60 (doesn't include transport to and from port in Ischia)
Option 3 - Private excursion with crossing to Naples and taxis to and from the site
The most expensive but comfortable option is to hire a driver for the day with an example itinerary as follows:
Collection from accommodation in Ischia (time depends on location of accommodation)
Drive to Ischia Porto
08:20 Caremar ferry from Ischia Porto to Pozzuoli
09:30 Arrive in Pozzuoli
10:15 Arrive Pompeii
Two hour visit of archaeological site
12:30 Depart Pompeii
13:15 Arrive Pozzuoli
14:00 Caremar ferry to Ischia
15:10 Arrive Ischia Porto
Return to accommodation in Ischia (time depends on location of accommodation)
Estimated package price (1-4 people): €575 (includes transport to and from accommodation in Ischia)
There are earlier and later crossings available throughout the day; generally it's best to arrive in Pompeii as early as possible when it's not as hot and busy.
In the example itinerary above, the driver would wait for two hours while you visited the archaeological site but it's possible to extend that by an hour or more if you'd like lunch.
