Fontana is a small village within the comune (like a borough in English) of Serrara Fontana and along with its neighbour Serrara, makes up one half of the comune's name.
The village is located along the main road that circles Ischia, the SS270 and lies between Barano to its east and Serrara to its west. The main village area comprises two churches, Chiesa Santa Maria delle Mercede and Chiesa di Sant'Antonio da Padova, the latter of which is notable for its large statue of Jesus Christ outside it. There are also a couple of bars and restaurants including Da Peppino and La Fonte. |
Many visitors head to Fontana because it's the point from which you can take the walk up to Mount Epomeo where there is also a third church (Chiesa di San Nicola on Mount Epomeo) and two more restaurants, Il Grotto di Mezzavia da Graziella and La Grotta da Fiore. From the village square there are sign posts to the mountain which can be reached in around an hour and a half from the village. From the main bus stop next to the village square you head left towards a greengrocers where you will find a road that starts at the bend of the main road which is the beginning of a steep hill.
There are two car parks in Fontana and one of these is also a great place to take in the views across to Capri and down to Maronti Beach. With its position on the main road, Fontana can easily be reached by bus with either the CS or CD routes passing through it.
