POSEIDON THERMAL GARDENS
Latest update: 29 January 2024
Poseidon Thermal Gardens is a thermal park that takes advantage of Ischia's natural hot springs where visitors are able to use 22 different swimming and bathing pools, each with their own different temperatures.
With Ischia's volcanic activity bubbling away under the surface of the island, the thermal water used at Poseidon naturally flows into the complex at very high temperatures. In order to achieve the required temperature at each pool, the water is cooled and systematically diverted to the different areas with temperatures ranging from 15 to 40° Celsius. |

The contrast in temperatures is most sharply felt at the Kneipp baths where you have a 15°C pool next to a 40°C pool. The idea is to spend up to 15 seconds in the extremely cold 15°C pool before the welcome relief of the 40° C pool next to it, a hydrotherapy system devised by the German priest, Sebastien Kneipp, from which the name derives. Among the more unusual of the pools is the Japanese pool where you undergo a hot and cold hydrotherapy treatment. Using similar principles to the Kneipp baths, in the Japanese pool you walk alternately through very hot and very cold troughs with pebbles at the bottom which massage your feet.
Given its picturesque location in the bay of Citara, a day at Poseidon offers a stress-free and calming environment in which you can completely switch off and reap the benefits of the thermal water. The park covers a large area and the pools are spread around so that each is easily accessible from the other with plenty of sunbeds, parasols and benches available so that you can choose between soaking in the pools or relaxing on a bed with a book or a cool drink (or both!). There's also a children's area, an indoor pool and lounge area, a sea-water pool, a boutique and a cafe-bar/restaurant where you can choose from a wide range of snacks, meals or drinks.
Apart from the 15 degree Kneipp pools which are extremely cold, the pools are all naturally warm and you can choose which temperature of pool you'd like to use at any given time. Most visitors tend to make their way around the complex over the course of the day, spending time in each of the different areas. For example, you can climb up the steps towards a grotto which houses a natural sauna where you can see the steam rising from the outside of its tufa stone.
There are a range of prices to visit Poseidon - some visitors elect to spend a half-day there at a discounted rate, while others choose to spend the whole day there comopetely switching off or perhaps by entering the wellness area for some pampering treatments or a massage.
The basic price for an adult to spend a day at Poseidon is €32 for the whole day (€34 in August) or €27 for just the afternoon (after 13:00). There is also a scale of prices for spending multiple days at the site with discounts available on a sliding scale with the greater discounts available depending on the amount you spend. For example, a ticket for two or three days is available at the equivalent of €25 per day, 4, 5 or 6 days are available at €24 per day and you can even book a ticket for 30 days and pay the equivalent of €19 per day (€570 in total).
