The Santa Restituta Museum in Lacco Ameno is situated on the site where archaeological excavations once took place underneath the Church of Santa Restituta (Chiesa di Santa Restituta) in the town's main square.
In the 1950's, repair work to the chapel of the church uncovered an ancient Christian cemetery and further tombs of Greco-Roman and Phoenician origin, as well as various kinds of ancient tools. Once these ancient relics were discovered, works on the excavation intensified and the site became a museum, thanks to the church rector at the time, Pietro Monti. |

The excavations gradually gave light to a cemetery with tombs from various eras, in what was also an "industrial zone", dedicated to the production of clay vases and containers. Activity in this area dates back to the time when the island was very first discovered by the Greeks, and the original name given to the island, Pithecusae, would seem to be related to this area with the ancient Greek word "Pithos", which is a type of terracotta jug that the Greeks produced for trade with the Etruscans on what is now mainland Italy.
The museum is divided in to two areas: The upper floor is a museum where artefacts such as vases, statues, amphorae (large vases or jugs), and tools are exhibited. The various materials used in the construction of these exhibits act as testimony to the existence of human life on the island throughout the course of a number of epochs and eras.
Beneath the museum is the enclosure of the excavation site of the industrial zone with its ancient ovens which were built for the manufacture of the clay materials that the Greeks produced. Also in this area are the cemetery with its tombs from different eras as well as walls built by the Romans.
