There are two names to this walk so to avoid any confusion I've given both in the title. The aim or destination of the walk is La Bocca di Tifeo, a gap in the rocks from which hot steam comes out from beneath the island. Many walkers take this route in order to use the steam as a natural sauna by putting their faces in the mouth of the cave to enjoy the refreshing jets that are constantly exuding from it.
The path that leads up to the steaming mouth is called Il Sentiero delle Fumarole and these are the signs that you should follow in order to reach the top. The route starts close to the village of Panza. From the main road which has the turn off to Panza village, instead take the turning on the opposite side of the road, next to the bus stop. This road leads past a mini football stadium and then winds round and up towards Mount Epomeo.
Follow the road until you start to pick up signs for Il Sentiero Delle Fumarole on your right hand side and then continue to follow these signs until you see the sign for La Bocca di Tifeo near the top.
This walk passes across the slopes of Mount Epomeo with some stunning mountain scenery and views down to Forio along the way. From the bus stop on the main road in Panza up to the Bocca di Tifeo itself takes between an hour and an hour and a half depending on your speed and is steep in places. Good footwear is an absolute must as there are some places with slippery wet stones that need care and attention before crossing.
