Testaccio is a village or "frazione" that belongs to the comune (or borough) of Barano in the south of Ischia. The name of the village partly derives from an association with the mythical giant "Tifeo" (Typhon or Typhos) who was said to have been imprisoned under the island by the god Zeus as punishment for an attack. Tifeo's rage at being shackled in chains is said to have accounted for the earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that formed the island of Ischia at its inception. Several villages on the island along with Testaccio such as Panza (stomach) and Ciglio (eye-lash) were supposedly named after the angry god's body parts as a mark of respect in the hope that this would appease his rage and stop the natural disasters!

These days Testaccio is a quiet village that most people will first notice as they make their way down to the famous Maronti beach which is just a short distance away. Visitors have to first pass through Testaccio as the road winds its way down the hill and the mainly residential area is characterized by a supermarket, a few bars such as Bar Gina and a few hotels like Hotel Terme Saint Raphael, Hotel La Luna & Albergo Villa Giusto.
The main attraction in the village is the beautiful Chiesa di San Giorgio with its beautiful yellow and white striped façade.
How to get to Testaccio:
Testaccio is very is to reach and to find as it lies just off the main SS270 road that rings the island. For car or scooter drivers it's simply a case of following the signs for Maronti Beach when you reach the turning between the villages of Piedimonte and Ischia Ponte. Testaccio is the first village you come across and you'll know you're there when you see the UPIM supermarket. There are several bus routes that pass through the village too such as the number 5 which runs direct from Ischia Porto with a journey time of about 15 minutes. You can also use a CS or a CD bus and get off at Piedimonte and then take a number 10 or 11.
