Ischia lies at the northern end of the gulf of Naples in the region of Campania in Southern Italy. It is an island of approximately 10 kilometres (6 miles) from east to west and 7 kilometres (4 miles) from north to south. The surface area measures just over 46 kilometres squared (about 18 square miles) with a coastline of 34 kilometres (21 miles).
The islands of Procida, Vivara and Nisida are Ischia's closest neighbours and the four islands together are collectively known as the "Phlegraean Islands". The island of Capri which is 33 kilometres (18 miles) away is also sometimes added to the group but is often a matter of conjecture.
Most visitors to Ischia will at some point pass through Naples in order to take the ferry or hydrofoil crossing which takes an hour and a half in the case of the ferries and about an hour for the hydrofoils. Naples is 33 kilometres (18 miles) away from Ischia and some other notable destinations nearby include the Amalfi Coastline. Favourite towns such as Amalfi, Positano, Ravello and Sorrento are all within reach for a day trip while there is a daily hydrofoil service from Alilauro every morning from Sorrento to Ischia which takes around 40-45 minutes in each direction and returns in the early evening.
Ischia also attracts visitors from cruise-ships when they make their stops in Naples. The close proximity of the ferry and hydrofoil ports to the cruise liner ports make the short hop to Ischia an attractive proposition while many of those day visitors choose to take a guided tour of the island or simply to relax at one of the thermal parks or natural spas such as Sorgeto.
