Imagine yourself walking along a very sharp slope, on a common road in the countryside. All of sudden, after a bend, you find yourself in front of an unusual spectacle of nature: a deep valley speckled with high white pinnacles, 5 or 6 metres high, rising from the valley among the natural green vegetation below.
This curious geological formation, resembling the Dolomites (although much, much smaller!) is a mass of white tufa stone, eroded by wind and rain over thousands of years. Tufa stone is a very fragile and brittle stone , for this reason the whole area and the paths nearby are quite crumbly and slippery.
The trekking trail from Pizzi Bianchi (the White Peaks) to Cavascura is quite intense and diverse. It provides the chance to enjoy different views and a different landscape around each new corner.
The starting point is the little village of Noia, between Serrara and Fontana. On the main SS270 road you can see an iron cross on the side of the road (as shown in the photo). The little square nearby is the starting point: follow the slope down Via Casale, always keeping to the right side (you will notice a firework factory called “Ischia Pirica”) as the road gets steeper and without cement.
All of a sudden, turning a bend on the right, you will face the white peaks set in the valley, surrounded by rich and green vegetation with yellow broom (ginestra), oak trees and a large number of vineyards all around.
After passing the valley, still walking straight along a narrow and at some points, a very steep path, Sant’Angelo bay with its hill will be visible on your right side. The walk continues among fields where you will notice several stone shelters, used by farmers in the past to store their tools and rest after a long working day in the fields.
You will then reach a deep cave that you will pass through high steps and with the help of ropes hanging from the trees! The experience is quite unique and adventurous!
Once you’re out of the cave you are almost there. Below you is Cavascura thermal springs, with its azure cabins and thermal baths.
Follow the path until you reach the sign “Cavascura” on the right. Take the easy path that will take you along some steps to Cava scura canyon, very close to Maronti Beach. You can then end the hike with a rewarding and well deserved swim at the beach or by taking a hot thermal bath at the Cavascura spa.
Have fun!
