CLIMATE IN ISCHIA
Analysis of the typical climate and seasons in Ischia describing average temperatures through the various seasons and the best times to visit the island.
With its position in the Gulf of Naples, Ischia enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate of long, hot summers and mild winters. The highest temperatures occur in July and August where the mercury can reach as high as 38-40° Celcius which is around 100° Fahrenheit. Unsurprisingly it is during these hottest months that the island receives most of its visitors and is at its absolute peak during the middle of August which is the week known as "Ferragosto" in Italy when the major towns and cities are deserted in favour of holiday destinations such as Ischia and other coastal regions.
Many people however choose the slightly cooler months of June or September where temperatures average anywhere from 25-30° Celcius (77-86° Fahrenheit) and there is generally more space everywhere such as on the beaches and at the thermal water parks.
Autumn begins on the 21st September but it's still possible to have hot, sunny days even during November where temperatures have been known to get up to 25°C (77°F).
The lowest temperatures on the island occur during the winter which begins on December 21st and lasts until early March. During January and February temperatures can get down as low as 4°C (40°F) in some of the higher parts of the island such as Serrara Fontana or Barano. The average daily temperature during these months is around 10-14°C (50-57°F) and this is also the time of the most rainfall on the island.
Spring starts on March 21st when the island comes out of its slight hibernation and most of the hotels re-open after their winter closure in time for the Easter celebrations. It must be said however that many hotels stay open all year round and enjoy the custom of visitors who are looking for wellness holidays at the many spa centres.
