LA FESTA DI SAN MICHELE
LA FESTA DI SAN MICHELE
The Festa di San Michele is a religious event that takes place every year in Sant'Angelo in respect of the village's patron saint. The celebrations begin from the small square by the harbour where a flotilla of small boats follow the statue of Saint Michael as it's paraded on the sea towards the bay of Sorgeto. Along the shoreline the whole village is beautifully lit with candles and fires as the various yachts and fishing vessels pass by along with the effigy being carefully guarded by its protectors.
Upon reaching Sorgeto the ships turn back towards the village and then on to Maronti beach. After a brief pause a terrific firework display lights up the night sky and as the boats gradually sail back towards the village, the whole coastline is ablaze with a spectacular display of pyrotechnics.
The date of the event may change year on year depending on the weather but it's a spectacle not to be missed and one of the highlights on the Ischian calendar. Typical dates of the event are the 29th and 30th September but keep an eye on our Ischia Events Calendar for this year's event dates.
