The Chiesa della Santa Trinità is one of the smallest churches in Ischia and lies in one of its most remote locations, half way along the road that passes through the middle of the island connecting Barano to Casamicciola. The area that the church is situated in is known as Cretaio which derives from the word "crater", referring to the huge ditch that was created by the volcanic eruption that originally formed the island. The Chiesa della Santa Trinità was first built in 1731 but was destroyed by the earthquake in 1883 which devastated the town of Casamicciola Terme and the surrounding areas. The church was reconstructed soon after the earthquake.
To reach the church it's best to take a car or a scooter. From Casamicciola head inland and follow the signs to Barano. This road climbs steadily for quite a while, entering a pine forest. At a certain point and in a very remote area you will see the Il Focolare Restaurant with the church just before it.
