Latest update: 19 March 2022
CHIESA DI SAN CIRO (ISCHIA PORTO)
Constructed: 1926
Style: Modern
Location: Situated in the middle of the shopping district on Via Morgioni, Ischia Porto.
Set on a busy shopping street, near the supermarket, the modern Chiesa di San Ciro serves the local community. Built on a Greek Cross plan it offers a large, airy, spacious hall for worshipers. In a simple colour scheme of yellow and white, with composite pilasters, continuous entablature, barrel vaults and a half-dome over the apse, the modern stain glass windows, in very bright colours, come as something of a surprise.
The tall façade has three entrances - the central wooden door is decorated with bronze panels depicting scenes from the New Testament.
Saint Ciro (250 – 303) was born in Alexandria in Egypt and was martyred there. His feast Day is on January 31st. He was a Monk and noted Physician, who was known for treating both body and soul, often referred to as Saint Ciro the ‘Penniless’ because he gave his services freely. He is the Patron Saint of Sicily.
