CHIESA DI SAN GIROLAMO

The Chiesa di San Girolamo is a very early church is one of the smallest on the Island. A plain door set in a simple façade with gable and bell above, is of the utmost simplicity. S. Jerome or S. Girolamo (347 – 420) was a theologian and Doctor of the Church, who spent many years in seclusion, living as a hermit.
The simple barrel vaulted interior, is cave like in its lack of light and decoration. A mosaic defines the chancel arch and a low dome, with oculus over the choir, is decorated with an unusual abstract mosaic design made up of minute tesserae. The oculus lets in light over the altar – the pendentives are decorated with papal keys and tiaras. An icon of the Madonna and Child hangs behind the altar, to complete the simplicity of this little church.
