The Chiesa di Santa Maria al Monte is located high up on the slopes of Mount Epomeo in Forio. The small church becomes the main destination on the island for devotees who want to celebrate the day of Santa Maria on the 12th September.
Among the festivities are a mass inside the church and a running race that starts in Forio town centre and finishes in the courtyard of the church. There are also picnics and celebratory meals held in the area surrounding the church on what is a day of celebration in Italy.
