CHIESA DI SANTA MARIA ANNUNZIATA (CAMPAGNANO)
Latest update: 19 March 2022
CHIESA DI SANTA MARIA ANNUNZIATA (CAMPAGNANO)
Constructed: 18th Century
Location: Via Campagnano, Ischia
A bus ride away from Ischio Porto, set in a pretty piazza in the small hamlet of Campagnano, high above Ischia Ponte, deep in the countryside, is the pretty Chiesa di Santa Maria Annunziata.
Like many churches in Ischia, its earlier history is unknown but it seems that there was an earlier church (17th c) dedicated to S. Sebastian and it’s not known when it changed its name. Major work was carried out on the structure in 1792.
The façade is particularly beautiful, divided into two registers – an upper and lower, the upper decorated with ceramic tiles by an unknown ceramicist in the 19th c, depicting the Vision of S. John Joseph and the Annunciation of the Virgin, set within a floral background. At either end are bell towers, the south decorated with green and yellow tiles.
The interior is in the form of a Latin cross, lit by clerestory windows, the crossing covered with a dome and lantern windows. At the north end of the transept, is a 17th c altar with painting above depicting The Ecstasy of St. Teresa (1796) oil on canvas signed by Bartolomeo Viano. On the other side is an oil painting by an unknown artist depicting The Madonna with S. Peter & S. Vito. Very fine 19th c candlesticks decorate the main altar at the eastern end of the church.
