CHIESA GESU BUON PASTORE
Latest update: 14 March 2022
CHIESA GESU BUON PASTORE
Style: Modern
Conctructed in: 1970s
Address: Via Leonardo Mazzella, Ischia Porto
Constructed by: Franco Tisciono
The Chiesa Gesù Buon Pastore comes as a complete surprise and is well worth a visit. Triangular or tent shaped in its construction, everything about it and its interior is contemporary. The iconography is based on Christ the Good Shepherd and the huge wall panel behind the main alter is a very modern and very beautiful mixed media representation of Christ, on this theme, incorporating ceramic tiles, as well as beaten brass work.
The interior provides a huge hall shaped space which is uninterrupted by supporting columns and illuminated by colourful stain glass windows, the work of the Bottega Arte Fiorentina and painted panels on a gold background, somewhat reminiscent of Giotto’s panels in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, which depict New Testament stories from the Birth of Christ on the North Wall, to his major miracles on the South Wall. Larger than life size panels of the Four Evangelists hang in the corners. Smaller rectangular panels depict the Stations of the Cross.
Of particular note is the entrance which provides an interesting curtain effect and brass heads representing the Twelve Apostles. Set off the road in its own garden, with a freestanding bell tower, this Church is quite unique
