CHIESA SAN GIUSEPPE DELLA CROCE
Latest update: 19 March 2022
CHIESA SAN GIUSEPPE DELLA CROCE
Constructed: 20th century
Location: Fisherman's Beach (Spiaggia dei Pescatori), Ischia Ponte
The Chiesa San Giuseppe della Croce, part of the street frontage which overlooks the beach piled high with fishing boats and a pretty view across the bay towards the distant mountains, is unusual because of its location, almost on the beach! It was donated by the Talamo Iannuzzi family from Naples in 1908.
The focal point of this barrel vaulted interior is the oak wood altar, the work of local craftsmen.
St John Joseph of the Cross (1654 – 1739) is the Patron Saint of Ischia. He was born on the island to prosperous and devout parents. When he was 16, he entered the Order of S. Francis in Naples – he was beatified in 1789 and canonized in 1839. He was known for his championship of the poor and his adherence to poverty, chastity and obedience throughout his life. In Ischia he is honoured on 5th March with festivities and canon fire.
