CHIESA SANTA MARIA DI COSTANTINOPOLI (ISCHIA PONTE)
Constructed: 1693
Style: Baroque
Location: Via Luigi Mazzella, Ischia Ponte.
Tucked into the side of Chiesa dello Santo Spirito, it’s easy to miss the pretty little church, the Chiesa Santa Maria di Constantinopoli. It had its beginnings in 1613, when the local community decided that they wanted to have their own oratory, distinct from that founded by the Mariners and Fishermen. Heated debates ensued but in the end the church was constructed and opened in 1626. It was completely reconstructed in 1693.
The narrow façade is unusual in its effect of overlapping temple fronts and a broken pediment supported by pilasters with a bell tower incorporated into the apex, surmounted by a cross. A pretty flight of stairs, leads to a small open atrium giving access to the interior.
The internal space has a vaulted nave and no aisles with an apse at the eastern end. Clerestory windows provide ample light. The walls are frescoed within lunar shapes depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments, creating a highly decorative effect, which is continued in the ceiling in roundels and triangles. The organ is found in the minstrels’ gallery, above the entrance. This church glows like a jewel.
