GOOD MORNING ISCHIA! FRIDAY 22ND NOVEMBER 2013
Welcome to our Ischia blog, Good Morning Ischia! Here you can see the entry for Friday 22nd November 2013.
Good morning Ischia!
We wake up this morning to cloudy skies and the traces of last night's rain which has just started again as I type. I can also see the sea is slightly rough ("mare agitato" as they say here), despite the winds being much lighter than they were yesterday. Today looks to be the worst of the next three days with temperatures around a maximum of 18° celcius (64° fahrenheit) and we look set for showers throughout the day. The temperature this evening should be 13°C (55°F), similar to how it was last night and it's getting towards that time when we have to consider putting the heating on for the first time this year!
Today's photo is of a much brighter and happier sight than we get by looking up at the sky today and is one of the jewels of Ischia. The beautiful hibiscus can be seen all over the island and seems to produce an endless supply of new flowers every day. Even now as we start to head into winter, there are lots of varieties still in full bloom from gardens to roadside bushes as it obviously thrives in these island conditions.
Apart from the deep red variety that can be seen in the photo, you can also see yellows, oranges, peaches and pinks, each with a second colour at the centre of the flower, meaning there are dozens of different combinations on display wherever you go on the island.
Although by now most flower varieties are starting to think about going into hiding, there is still an array of colour in the garden and looking outside now I can see bright pink and velvety red roses, a beautiful yellow & orange dahlia and the less colorful but fascinating nonetheless, "night-blooming jasmine". This incredible plant flowers only at night time but when it comes out everybody knows about it as it has such a strong and captivating aroma. It's said that the scent from these plants can be detected from half a kilometre away, depending on its size, and once you recognise its bouquet you become addicted to its sweet perfume.
There are also significant splashes of colour provided by some of the island's fruit trees as the many oranges begin to ripen along with the variety of greens and yellows that show the different stages of maturity of the lemon trees.
So despite the weather being slightly gloomy, there's still lots to see and do on the island, most of which is provided by Mother Nature and her wonderful ability to dazzle us all with her beauty.
That's all for today, we'll be here ready to help with your questions and queries about Ischia so just drop us a line if you need anything.
Ciao!
