GOOD MORNING ISCHIA! FRIDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2013
Welcome to our Ischia blog, Good Morning Ischia! Here you can see the entry for Friday 29th November 2013.
Good morning Ischia!
And what a beautiful morning it is! As I opened the shutters ("persiane" in Italian) I was temporarily blinded by the dazzling sunlight as it filled my eyes and swept into the room. Those dubious weather forecasters who are shaking my faith further and further each day tell me that we're in for a continuation of this morning's conditions so I'll stick with them for one more day to share their predictions of a very warm maximum temperature of 16° celcius (61° fahrenheit) for this afternoon, with about 12° celcius (53° fahrenheit) as the minimum for this evening, quite a jump from yesterday.
For today's photo I've chosen the view from the Frassitelli Vineyards, high up on the slopes of Mount Epomeo. Standing at just under 800 metres tall, the mountain dominates the skyline and can be seen from many miles away from neighbouring islands or by ferries & hydrofoils as they approach the island.
The Frassitelli Vineyards are located at one of the highest points of the mountain, allowing for the remarkable views such as those that can be seen in the image above. Views however, are not the only thing that make this place special, being a vineyard it is obviously dedicated to the production of wine and under the careful guidance of the D'Ambra family that looks after the vines, the result is some of the highest rated wine production in Italy.
Casa D'Ambra are renowned as one of the foremost wine labels in Ischia, having won many awards and DOC ratings for their various wines. They produce around half a million bottles per year and many of the grapes used are grown at the Frassitelli Vineyards. The height of the location coupled with the soil type and the tufa-stone rock of Mount Epomeo make for the ideal growing conditions for the vines and allow the production of their quality labels.
Visitors to Ischia can enjoy the fruits of the D'Ambra family's labour in several ways. We offer excursions where you can visit the excellent museum at the Casa D'Ambra headquarters in Panza which include the huge cantina where all of those bottles are produced. In fact, the bottling machine that seals 3,000 bottles per hour is one of the highlights of the tours which are carried out with the expert guidance of the young D'Ambra sisters whose knowledge of wine and its history is outstanding.
The tours then move from the cantina up to Frassitelli which is around a 15 minute drive away up some narrow, steep and twisty roads before you arrive at the incredible panoramic vista near the top of the mountain. Here you not only see the vines but you can also try some of the wines with a meal specially prepared in the mountain-top kitchen which is carved out of the rock.
The combination of the wines and the spectacular views make these tours a really unique way to spend a half day when you're in Ischia and you can of course buy any wine directly from the vineyard that you would like to take home with you. There are various packages available for the Casa D'Ambra tours so if you're interested just drop us a line and we'll explain all of the options to you.
Ok, that's all from me on this gorgeous day in Ischia, I think I'll get out and about and take some more photos of this glorious island bathed in sunshine. Have a great day wherever you are and get ready for the weekend!
