GOOD MORNING ISCHIA! FRIDAY 8TH NOVEMBER 2013
Welcome to our Ischia blog, Good Morning Ischia! Here you can see the entry for Friday 8th November 2013.
Good morning Ischia!
It's another lovely start to the day with just a few clouds around and the sun gradually rising. Although it's easy enough to just look outside to see the weather, it's still necessary to check the forecasts for the rest of the day and there's no greater sight than seeing one of those little symbols of just the sun with no clouds attached to it and that's what we have today! Temperatures this afternoon will be up around 22° celcius (72° fahrenheit) this afternoon and a very warm 20°C (67°F) for this evening.
Today's photo is of a seagull flying just off the coast of Ischia with a sailboat a little way behind in the distance. This particular seagull was photographed on a ferry crossing from Naples to Ischia as it followed the boat in search of generous passengers. On a sunny day it's pleasant to sit out on deck of the ferry and enjoy the marvellous views of the mainland to one side and the islands of first, Procida and then Ischia. It's not unusual to be accompanied on the journey by seagulls as they hover around the back of the ferry-deck and it's fascinating to watch them at close-hand as they glide through the air, seemingly effortlessly.
Many of the crossings from Naples stop first at Pozzuoli and there have been occasions where passengers have disembarked there instead of their intended destination of Ischia so if you're making the journey for the first time, make sure you don't get off at the wrong place! Procida is distinctive as the port has an array of brightly-coloured houses and is also around half an hour closer to Naples by ferry or about 15 minutes closer by hydrofoil.
Ischia has a distinctly different shape to Procida, as you approach the first thing you notice is a dark green shadow on the horizon and as the island looms into view that shadow becomes more discernible as the tree-lined slopes of Mount Epomeo which reaches just under 800 metres at its highest point. The other unmistakable sight as you get closer to the island is of a castle which sits on its own island slightly out to sea and linked to the mainland by a small bridge. That castle is of course Ischia's famous icon, Castello Aragonese in Ischia Ponte.
For more information about the crossing from Naples (or Pozzuoli) on the mainland to Ischia click here or contact us if you have any questions that you don't see an answer for on the site.
To add a little bit of daily historical interest, I'll also be including a famous birthday at the end of each day's blog, this is in addition to the name days/saint's days that we have already. The debutant for famous birthdays is Bram Stoker, the author of Dracula, who was born on this day way back in 1847.
Ok so that's all for today, enjoy yourselves wherever you are and just drop us a line if you need any help with anything.
A domani!
Today's name day/saint's day: San Goffredo vescovo (Bishop Saint Godfrey)
