GOOD MORNING ISCHIA! MONDAY 23RD DECEMBER 2013
Welcome to our Ischia blog, Good Morning Ischia! Here you can see the entry for Monday 23rd December 2013.
Good morning Ischia!
It's another gorgeous start to the day in Forio! The sun is shining and once again it's lovely and warm, unseasonably so you'd have to say seeing as we're now just two days away from Christmas. The garden is full of colour, provided mainly by the fruit trees with the bright yellow lemons and the erm, orange oranges, while the scarlet and pink roses are still doing their bit to add to the palette of winter shades on display. The sea is as still as a photograph and temperatures should range between 16° Celcius (60° fahrenheit) and 11°C (52°F).
Today's photo comes from the fountain in Forio town centre which the local people affectionately call "The Bidet" due to its characteristic shape. At Christmas time the fountain is home to a nativity scene that has a vital ingredient missing, the baby Jesus. At midnight on the 24th/25th there are masses held in churches all across the island and after one such mass in Forio, the figure of the special child is symbolically placed in its crib to complete the scene. At the same time as the figure is placed in the nativity there are people out on the street celebrating the event with Spumante, Panettone and Pandoro which is offered by the local association of shopkeepers.
The next event on the Christmas agenda (apart from me doing my shopping which I STILL haven't done!) is the special installation at Castello Aragonese known as "Castello di Luce", where the castle will be illuminated by the famous Venetian artist Marco Nereo Rotelli. The first lights should come on this evening at around 630pm so get yourselves over to Ischia Ponte if you can as that should be spectacular.
Tomorrow morning is another of the most important traditions in Forio which is the Christmas Eve fish market. The market opens very early in the morning at 4 or 5am and is a festive occasion where people can buy the fresh fish for the traditional evening meal. Whilst looking at the various fish on offer you can also enjoy a special helping of a special pasta dish to keep you warm at that most ungodly of hours! We'll be there of course taking some photos and will report back tomorrow morning.
Ok that's all from me today, there's lots to see and do so I should be on my way. Do feel free though to drop me a line if you have any questions about Ischia and where you need to go to see the various festivities.
A domani!
