GOOD MORNING ISCHIA! SATURDAY 30TH NOVEMBER 2013
Welcome to our Ischia blog, Good Morning Ischia! Here you can see the entry for Saturday 30th November 2013.
Good morning Ischia!
A happy St.Andrew's day to everybody in Scotland which is also celebrated in Italy as San Andrea/St Andrew the apostle (well done to Google by the way for their very cool Scottish Saltire flag design this morning). The sun is on the rise as I type and despite being in the dark for a little while yet, I can see that we're in for a bit of a cloudy morning. Out and about in Forio last night it did feel quite chilly but this morning doesn't feel quite as cold and that's borne out in the predictions for today's temperatures which are showing as a maximum of 17° celcius (62° fahrenheit) and a minimum of 13° celcius (55° fahrenheit), a touch warmer than yesterday.
Today's photo comes from one of those places in Ischia that really reinforce the belief that the island is blessed with magical powers. The hot springs of Sorgeto are famous the world over and attract visitors from far and wide.
Located close to the village of Panza, Sorgeto is a small bay with a rocky beach that possesses naturally hot springs of water. Arriving at Sorgeto, the first thing you will be faced with is a viewing area that allows you to see down to the bay on one side and across to Sant'Angelo on the other, with some fantastic panoramic views. You can then make your descent down some stairs which although fairly steep in places are extremely safe and well-maintained. Depending on your level of fitness you may need a bit of a breather by the time you reach the bottom but by that stage you will be in exactly the right place to give your body a well earned rest.
When you reach the rocky beach at the end of the stairs you will see to your left a series of rock pools that have been marked out in a roughly circular shape. There are also a a number of wooden planks that link the different pools and these allow you to find the right spot to temporarily claim as your own. At its very hottest, the water at Sorgeto can reach around 100 degrees celcius but that particular area is cordoned off as obviously that's ever so slightly too hot to bathe in! Once you've found yourself a place in one of the pools you can simply sit and relax in what amounts to a natural jacuzzi with a fantastic view in front of you and some great people to sit and have a casual chat with if you so desire.
As can be seen in the image above, there are some people who take food along with them to Sorgeto to be cooked in the water. In the example from today's photo, potatoes were placed in a specially-prepared cage to allow them to sit in the simmering water and create a great hot snack whilst relaxing in the pools. On other occasions you may see eggs or even chicken cooked in a similar way.
Sorgeto is not only popular during the daytime, during the summer it's not unusual to see people there at night time with drinks and picnics as they take a moonlit dip with a glass or two of Prosecco, a great way of making some new friends and enjoying a truly unique experience.
You can reach the springs either on foot from Panza which takes around half an hour or so and is a very pleasant walk through some vineyards with some great views along the way or alternatively you can drive there through the steep and narrow lanes, with a car park available close to the top of the steps.
Anyone who hasn't yet been to Ischia should mark Sorgeto down as one of the not-to-be-missed features of the island so if you're planning a trip here soon and would like some more information just drop us a line and we'll be very happy to oblige.
Ok that's all from me for this morning, enjoy your weekend wherever you are and there'll be more in this space about Ischia tomorrow morning.
A presto!
