GOOD MORNING ISCHIA! SATURDAY 7TH DECEMBER 2013
Welcome to our Ischia blog, Good Morning Ischia! Here you can see the entry for Saturday 7th December 2013.
Good morning Ischia!
It's a beautiful start to the weekend, the sun is rising like a kite over Mount Epomeo and the air is filled with busy, happy noises from the neighbouring houses. The distant whirr of some kind of agricultural machine is accompanied by the sound of children as they excitedly entertain themselves in a nearby garden. A friendly cat approaches me as I step outside, looking for a few cuddles to warm him after his Friday night out in Forio, and the idyllic scene is neatly rounded off by the now unmistakable sound of a lemon falling off a tree and rolling across the roof.
Today's weather forecast matches the visual evidence with sunshine all the way and a very light breeze setting us up perfectly for the day. The maximum temperature is down a bit from yesterday by about 4 degrees to 13° celcius (56° fahrenheit) but wavering very little through the course of the day with a minimum of 12°C (53°F) expected, ideal conditions for getting out and about and exploring a little bit of what Ischia has to offer.
Today's photo is in homage to the aforementioned conditions and shows a couple of ceramic suns on offer in a shop front in Forio. As you walk around the shopping areas on the island you will see many types of hand-made ceramics, brightly-coloured with various symbols of the island such as fish, fruit or scenes of fishing villages. Many private houses adorn their outside walls with the ceramics, creating a kind of live art-gallery as you move from one home to the next. You'll also find that many of those ceramics are maps of Ischia with all of the major points of interested noted, helping visitors find their way around the pretty island.
Rather incongruous to the lovely weather conditions we are enjoying today, is the subject of the ice-rink that is due to be unveiled in Ischia today. Measuring a cool 20 x 30 metres the "Pista di Pattinaggio" will be inaugurated with some ice-dancing and other seasonal festivities before opening to the public. Located in Piazzetta San Girolamo it will stay open for more than a month, until the 19th January. The piazzetta is situated on Corso Vittoria Colonna in Ischia Porto, at the heart of the island's capital town. This is a new venture for Ischia and the cause of a great deal of excitement. Of all the activities you can enjoy here I never thought I'd be talking about ice-skating so the island has surprised me once again! I hope to bring you some photos of the ice-rink tomorrow so watch this space...
Ok that's all for this morning. Enjoy your weekend and there'll be an update waiting here for you tomorrow around the same time.
A domani!
