GOOD MORNING ISCHIA! THURSDAY 31ST OCTOBER 2013
Welcome to our Ischia blog, Good Morning Ischia! Here you can see the entry for Thursday 31st October 2013.
Good morning Ischia!
And Happy Halloween! Is it really the 31st October already? Wow, where has the year gone! Well the weather today in Ischia does not fit with the usual images of ghosts and ghouls spooking people on a cold autumnal evening. The skies are clear (save for a few witches on broomsticks) and we're expecting temperatures of 23° celcius/73° fahrenheit this afternoon and a low of 20° celcius/67° fahrenheit this evening so if you are planning on dressing up as a ghost, keep those layers to a minimum!
Today's photo is of a shop in Forio town centre. This particular shop sells a mixture of souvenirs and basic groceries and is typical of what you can find in many places around the island with its selection of local food products such as Limoncello or lemon biscuits, cosmetics made from Ischia's thermal water, local wines and the quintessentially Italian sight of chillies hanging from the awning.
Forio is the second largest of Ischia's six "comune", the others being Ischia (Ischia Porto & Ischia Ponte) which is the largest, Casamicciola, Lacco Ameno, Serrara Fontana and Barano. The comunes work in a similar way to local boroughs and all have their own elected mayors with a degree of policy-making powers.
The town centre in Forio consists of a good number of shops, bars and restaurants and you can usually find most things you need there, be it clothes, gifts or essential items for the house, most bases are covered. The majority of the restaurants tend to be down by the busy harbour which is a home to various types of craft from fishing boats up to larger vessels such as the hydrofoils that cross between Naples on the mainland and directly to Forio on the western side of the island.
Forio's location on the western side of the island is pertinent for various reasons. With Mount Epomeo climbing to 788 metres and roughly in the centre of the island it means that many islanders living on the mountain's slopes wake up to the sight of slightly darker skies even though they can see the sun shining on the sea. However, the slight negative of having to wait an extra half an hour or so for the sun in the morning is more than made up for in the evening when this side of the island is drenched in sunshine for a considerable while after it has disappeared from some points on the eastern side of the island, but best of all are the amazing sunsets that can be seen from Forio's beaches such as Citara, Cava dell'Isola, Chiaia and San Francesco.
Forio is also home to the beautiful Chiesa del Soccorso and the gardens of La Mortella, Ravino and Corbaro Park. Yesterday we mentioned Poseidon Thermal Gardens which is one of the largest thermal parks on the island and can be found in Forio's bay of Citara while the small "frazione" (town within a borough or comune) of Panza is home to the natural hot springs of Sorgeto and the crystal clear waters around La Scannella.
There are also museums in Forio such as Il Torrione ("The Big Tower") which these days is home to art exhibitions but was originally built to protect the town's people from raiding pirates and another of Forio's most notable attractions, the La Colombaia Museum which was the former home and residence of legendary Italian film director Luchino Visconti.
Anybody wishing to stay in Forio is spoilt for choice with the range and number of accommodation options open to them with a large number of hotels, apartments and B&B's available while the island's bus and road network makes all of the places mentioned above very accessible.
For more information about Forio or anywhere else on the island you can click on the green links of the words above to be taken to the individual pages with photos or alternatively feel free to drop us a line and we'll be happy to hear from you and give you a more detailed reply to your query.
Anyway, that's all from me today, enjoy your day and watch out for those ghosts and ghouls!
