GOOD MORNING ISCHIA! WEDNESDAY 20TH NOVEMBER 2013
Welcome to our Ischia blog, Good Morning Ischia! Here you can see the entry for Wednesday 20th November 2013.
Good morning Ischia!
Rather surprisingly, we wake up this morning to the sight of clear blue skies and bright sunshine. I say surprisingly because last night's heavy wind and rain made such a loud noise that it seemed set to stick around for a good while longer. Thankfully though, today has at least started well so we can hope that it stays nice although the forecasts are looking a bit "mixed". Temperatures today should reach a maximum of 19° celcius (67° fahrenheit) this afternoon, with a minimum of 13°C (55°F) expected for this evening, a significant drop on yesterday.
Today's photo is of the fabulous "Corsa dell'Angelo" event which takes place every Easter in Forio. This special celebration is played out on the town's streets to packed audiences on Easter Sunday. The traditional ceremony tells the story of Jesus Christ's reunification with his mother, the Virgin Mary after raising from the dead just two days after his crucifixion. A series of standard-bearers carry effigies of the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ, the Golden Angel (pictured) and St. John as they conduct a beautiful reconstruction of Jesus' resurrection. Accompanied to the sounds of bells, the standard-bearers quickly run with the different statues as they each move towards each other in a complex sequence of manoeuvres which are greeted to cheers from the packed crowds that line the streets in celebration.
La Corsa dell'Angelo (the running of the Angel) follows the dramatic "Actus Tragicus" event which is also take place in Forio two days earlier on Good Friday. Otherwise known as "Christ's Passion", the occasion is a reconstruction of Christ's crucifixion, in the form of an open theatre as it begins by the port area with actors playing roles of the main protagonists including Judas Iscariot, Pontus Pilot and Jesus himself. The incredibly moving event is carried out with meticulous detail as Jesus carries his cross through the streets while being whipped and cursed by Roman Centurions. The emotional finale takes place in front of the Chiesa del Soccorso where the three crucifixes are erected to represent Golgotha.
These are just two of Ischia's events that take place over the course of the year with many more fascinating festivals and ceremonies that happen every year. Our Ischia Events Calendar shows you the dates for each of the different occasions so that you can see what will be happening during the time of your visit, or indeed so that you can plan your visit around the events themselves.
Ok that's all for today, I'll be back with more about Ischia tomorrow but feel free to drop us a line if you'd like to know anything else about the island or the events that take place here.
Ciao!
