GOOD MORNING ISCHIA! WEDNESDAY 9TH OCTOBER 2013
Welcome to our Ischia blog, Good Morning Ischia! Here you can see the entry for Wednesday 9th October 2013.
Good morning Ischia!
So what have you got planned for your day? Maybe a trip to the beach or a day at one of the thermal parks perhaps? Wherever you go today you're sure to come across some examples of one of Ischia's oldest traditions. As far back as the 8th century BC the island was settled by the Greeks and they named it "Pithaecusa". There are many theories as to the origin of the name but the most consistent relate to a type of jug or pot that they made here, called a "Pithos".
That tradition of craftwork is still going strong today with the production of ceramics. Many of the houses in Ischia are decorated on the outside with colorful ceramic plates, such as the fish in today's photo. There are dozens of shops around the island selling their home-made ceramics which make fantastic gifts and souvenirs. There are also a few places on the island where you can watch the ceramics being created such as "Keramos" in Casamicciola and whichever town you visit in Ischia will have its fair share of ceramic shops to choose from.
The bright and colourful ceramics also reflect the character of the island's people with their friendly disposition and creativity and with thousands of years of expertise being handed down through the generations, the islanders are able to share their craft with visitors and give them a little reminder of Ischia when their holiday comes to an end. So next time you get the chance, check out some of these wonderful creations and make sure you wrap up well any purchases so that they're safe on the way home!
Enjoy your day in Ischia!
