ISCHIA ON SUNDAY - THE WEEKLY ISCHIA BLOG: SUNDAY 18TH MAY 2014
Welcome to our weekly Ischia blog, Ischia on Sunday. Here you can see the entry for Sunday 18th May 2014
Good Morning Ischia!
It's been a bit of a slow start to the day in Ischia, both on a personal note and in terms of the general activity outside. Having been out way past my bedtime last night I woke this morning with bleary eyes and you could almost say the day itself is beginning in a similarly stuttering manner. To my left, Mount Epomeo is partially hidden by some morning cloud while to my right life seems slightly more advanced as the sun lights up the bay of Citara, and bells ring out from one of the churches down in Panza.
It was actually a fairly busy evening on the island last night with lots of people out and about. The main hub of activity was Lacco Ameno as the town celebrates a week of festivities in honour of its patron saint, Santa Restituta. Last night was one of the centrepiece events where a statue of the saint is taken at the head of a procession of boats that cruise up to the neighbouring town of Casamicciola and then back again with full pomp and ceremony. This, along with the spectacular lights and market stalls that are up all week long in the town, draws large crowds from people in all parts of the island. On Friday night there was the recreation of the story of Santa Restituta on San Montano Beach, and still to come tonight is a large firework display which marks the end of the week-long celebrations.
There was more activity down in Ischia Ponte last night where a new sculpture exhibition opened at Castello Aragonese. The castle's doors were open until late as the sculptor Giovanni de Angelis exhibited some of his incredible pieces made from a variety of materials including marble, wood and a typical type of stone from Ischia. The sculptor was there himself at last night's opening event, explaining how he created his work which is very original and of the highest calibre. For anyone interested in seeing the exhibition you need to enter the castle and when you reach the top in the lift, head over to the old Bourbon prison cell which is where the main body of the work is displayed. Over the next few days I'll be adding a page with some photos of the sculptor's work but if you'd prefer to just go and see it for yourselves you've got plenty of time with the exhibition running until the 30th of June.
For some reason I forgot to say anything at all about the weather in last week's blog which was very un-English of me and I will not make the same mistake twice! In fact this week's weather is of great importance as we're in for a bit of a dramatic change over the next seven days. It's going to be a nice day today with a good amount of sunshine and nice spring-like temperatures of 21° Celcius (70° fahrenheit) and whilst next week starts a bit disappointingly tomorrow with a few drops of rain, we're in for a bit of a heat-wave after that. From Tuesday onwards we're going to see a big rise with a maximum of 29°C (84°F) and an average of about 26°C (79°F) for the next couple of weeks so if you are visiting during that period make sure you pack plenty of sun-cream, swimming costumes, bucket and spades or whatever accessory you feel necessary to make the most of being down on the beach (actually don't actually bring a bucket and spade with you as that will needlessly take up lots of space in your luggage!).
Today's photo comes from Sant'Angelo, at the moment we're in the process of adding lots of new self-catering villas and apartments to the website and this photo was taken from a beautiful villa that we can now offer to our visitors. Walking round in this particular villa I couldn't stop smiling as everything about it was absolutely perfect, from the beautifully classic yet modern furnishings inside to the garden in full bloom that puts our own personal efforts to shame. However, without a doubt the best thing were the views and the photo above shows the view down to Le Fumarole Beach and then across to Maronti Beach with the island of Capri in the distance, a truly magnificent sight in every direction.
We'll be adding more information and photos for the available accommodation over the next few weeks but if you're looking for something I that you can't quite find on the website, just drop us a line and let us know what you need as we have plenty more villas and apartments available that we just haven't yet had time to put on the site.
Ok that's all from me for this week, I hope those of you that are already in Ischia are having a great time and for those of you that are planning a visit feel free to ask us anything about the island that you'd like to know. We welcome all of your questions as it helps us to build up a big knowledge database that we can share with everyone to make sure you all make the most of your visits.
Anyway, until next week.
A presto!
