ISCHIA ON SUNDAY - THE WEEKLY ISCHIA BLOG: SUNDAY 9TH NOVEMBER 2014
Welcome to our weekly Ischia blog, Ischia on Sunday. Here you can see the entry for Sunday 9th November 2014.
Good Evening Ischia!
Another week draws to a close and it's time for a little Ischia Review update. After a beautiful, sunny and warm afternoon it's now early evening and all is well on the western coast. Today we've had temperatures up around 23° Celcius (73° Fahrenheit) which is quite a leap upwards from what we had last week although I should say that's because we were on a little break a little way north of here. We were quite fortunate with our timing too as it seems we missed a bit of a storm which saw some parts of the island such as Ischia Ponte battered by gales that rendered Castello Aragonese unreachable for a few hours.
Anyway things are a lot more settled now and aside from a few scattered showers here and there, we look set fair for a pleasant week ahead with a maximum of 24°C (75°F) expected on Tuesday and generally speaking a minimum of around 18°C (65°F) in the evenings. It's been a bit strange actually because at this time of year you expect things to gradually get cooler as the weeks go by but I was way overdressed in my winter coat yesterday when arriving at Naples airport and caught out again today when even on the scooter I was too hot in a light anorak. It's basically gone from autumn back to summer again but I imagine that should only prove to be a brief seasonal regression.
In honour of the sunny weather I've chosen something nice and bright for this week's photo, a lovely shot of Le Fumarole Beach in Sant'Angelo. Actually this is one of my favourite parts of Ischia, there's a nice walkway between Sant'Angelo and Aphrodite Thermal Gardens which allows you to enjoy this very same view. The beach itself is famous for its fumaroles, jets of hot steam that come bellowing up from beneath the island, and there is one partuclar part of the beach that is so hot because of this that it has to be sectioned off with temperatures of anything up to 100°C (212°F). Some people take advantage of this natural phenomenon to cook food such as chicken, fish, potatoes or pretty much anything that you would normally place in an oven. By taking a shovel you can dig down to the very hottest part of the sand and then place the food in some kind of container or a sealed bag. After an hour or so (depending on the type of food) you can dig back down and retrieve the container before enjoying your naturally cooked meal as part of a picnic. There are other places on the island where something similar happens such as at Sorgeto Hot Springs in Panza where the food is placed in the naturally boiling water.
The whole area down by Le Fumarole is well worth a visit if you get the chance, despite just being a little corner with no road access (apart from the narrow lanes that are used b y golf buggies ferrying luggage to and from hotels), there's plenty to do down there. Aphrodite Thermal Gardens has twelve different thermal water pools and a restaurant with some stunning views across to Capri. You'll also find about half a dozen beach restaurants that come highly recommended such as Ristorante Emanuela and Le Fumarole da Nicola. From the centre of Sant'Angelo to Le Fumarole beach takes around 15-20 minutes along this undulating path which is quite steep in places and for those people that like walking you can go on to Maronti Beach which adds another 20 minutes or so. From Maronti you can take a water taxi back to Sant'Angelo if by that stage you feel like you've earned a rest, it's a very short journey of about 5 minutes costing €3 each but on a hot day it's worth every cent.
The walk mentioned above is listed on our "Walking Routes in Ischia" page where you'll find more detailed instructions and some alternative routes in different parts of the island. At this time of year the temperatures are perfect to discover the island on foot so if you are visiting some time soon, check those routes out and let us know if you need any more help or directions with them.
Ok that's all from me for the moment, this time next week I'll be on the road, heading north again and will try my best to provide you all with an update. Failing that you can always write in to [email protected] if there's anything you need to ask us.
Warm regards to all from an unseasonally warm Ischia :-)
A presto
