GOOD MORNING ISCHIA! FRIDAY 1ST NOVEMBER 2013
Welcome to our Ischia blog, Good Morning Ischia! Here you can see the entry for Friday 1st November 2013.
Good morning Ischia!
It's another beautiful start to the day with bright sunshine and not a cloud to be seen. My weather forecast is telling me we're in for a spot of rain later even if right now it seems hard to believe. Temperatures are nevertheless still very warm as we begin November with a high of 23° celcius (74° fahrenheit) and an evening low of 20°C (68°F) so if you are going out tonight you should be ok with a light cardigan or anorak if the predicted rain does come.
So how are you all feeling today? Did you have any strange encounters with ghosts or witches last night? There were lots of them on display around the island last night but thankfully only of the pretend kind, asking for "dolcetto o scherzetto", (trick or treat) as lots of children got dressed up as various spooky monsters and covered eachother in spray-foam and flour.
Today is in fact a national holiday in Ischia with many shops, school and businesses closed for the day. Following on from Halloween yesterday, today is "Ognissanti" (All Saints Day) which is always celebrated on the 1st November and tomorrow will be "Il Giorno Dei Morti" (The Day of the Dead). Ognissanti is celebrated in rather low-key fashion with many people simply enjoying a day off work or school, while others may observe the religious aspects more closely by going to mass and then having a family lunch together. Tomorrow's Giorno dei Morti is traditionally a day to respect the dead and to visit the graves of loved-ones who have passed away.
Today's photo is of La Chiesa di Santa Maria Al Monte in Forio, a small church on the slopes of Mount Epomeo. The pretty church and magnificent views are a reward for hikers who make the trek up from the main road near Ravino Gardens. If you're looking for a stiff test of your walking credentials then making the ascent towards Santa Maria Al Monte could be just the day out for you. If you follow the signs towards Corbaro Park you pass some magnificent countryside and scenery and after a couple of hours or so of walking mainly up hill, you can reward yourself with a light meal or bruschetta at one of the snack-bars close to the top of the climb, before making your descent.
For those of you not in Ischia at the moment, keep an eye out for our special holiday offers, every day we add a new offer and they are usually real bargains, especially the last-minute ones. We'll be updating today's offer very shortly but you can always contact us in advance if you want to be the first to be notified.
Anyway, that's all for today, enjoy the morning sunshine and let's hope the rain stays away until we're all tucked up in bed tonight.
Ciao!
