GOOD MORNING ISCHIA! FRIDAY 27TH DECEMBER 2013
Welcome to our Ischia blog, Good Morning Ischia! Here you can see the entry for Friday 27th December 2013.
Good morning Ischia!
It's a slightly cloudy start to the day here in Forio but a significant change from yesterday's rather miserable conditions. We had a day of torrential rain and heavy winds which caused the temporary suspension of some ferry services for a few hours in the morning. Things are much better today though with just a light breeze and the sea somewhere between motionless and lazily stirring. There's a little bit of dampness in the air but no sign of rain just yet.
The cloud that's covering the island doesn't fully extend out on to the horizon and while the overhead visibility is low, looking out to sea things are looking much brighter, so much so that you can see the sun reflecting off a car window on the island of Ventotene which is twenty five miles away. I think we'll get a few drops of rain this afternoon but the prospects for the rest of the week look very good with lots of clear skies predicted. Temperatures today should stay quite steady with the overhead cloud and hover around a maximum of 12° Celcius (53° fahrenheit) and a minimum of 11°C (51°F) with a slight drop expected tomorrow.
Today's photo is of the beautiful Chiesa del Soccorso in Forio, this tiny church sits on a promontory close to the port and the town centre and is one of the most famous landmarks on the Ischitan landscape. The church in its present form dates back to around 1864 although there was a convent on the site as long ago as 1350. Architecturally it takes on influences from Greek-Byzantine, Moorish and Mediterranean styles with its white-washed walls catching the eye from as far away as San Francesco Beach.
Outside the church is a large open space which is used by visitors and residents alike to catch some great views down to Forio town centre on one side and across the Tyrhennian Sea on the other. This open space is used for events throughout the year but perhaps most notably for the "Actus Tragicus", the Easter recreation of the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ where the space becomes a temporary Golgotha with three crucifixes raised for the climax of the event.
There are various ways of reaching Chiesa del Soccorso, from the main shopping street of Via Matteo Verde follow the direction of the sea until you reach a small children's playground and car park. Turn right there and take the first left and the beautifully manicured cobbled street leads you up to the church. There are also some steps that lead down to the main road and yet another way in via the Umberto A Mare restaurant which sits just below the church. It's difficult to miss Chiesa del Soccorso anyway, during the daytime you can clearly see it from most places around the port area, but at night time it really comes into its own with its elegant blue lighting giving it a stunning evening glow.
Ok that's all from me for this morning, I'm not sure it's the best day to get out and about on the scooter as there's still a bit of dampness around and one incredibly steep hill that I have to descend before reaching the main road so I'll probably go out for a walk and see what else I can find.
Please keep all the emails coming in, it's great to hear from you all in different parts of the world and you'll always receive a very warm welcome here.
Anyway, for now.
Ciao!
