GOOD MORNING ISCHIA! SATURDAY 4TH JANUARY 2014
Welcome to our Ischia blog, Good Morning Ischia! Here you can see the entry for Saturday 4th January 2014.
Good morning Ischia!
It's been a bit of a cold and damp day today with plenty of rain and cloud around but the outlook for the next few days is much better with lots of sunshine predicted for the early part of next week. Temperatures have ranged from a minimum of 12° Celcius (53° fahrenheit) and peaking at around 17°C (63°F) this afternoon. The island is still bedecked in its Christmas decorations as the season's festivities have not quite finished, Monday the 6th of January is Epiphany and marked with a national holiday right across the country.
Epiphany is also known as La Befana and we've started to see a steadily increasing number of witches around in shops and bars over the last few days as Ischia prepares for the final fling of the Christmas period. La Befana being a witch who travels around on a stick the night of the 5th January delivering presents to children in socks. If the children have been well behaved they receive some chocolates or other small gifts, and if they have been bad then it's a lump of old charcoal that they have to make do with. If they've been a bit naughty but not so bad at other times then their parents may indulge them with a combination of chocolates and charcoal and that ratio may or may not increase according to said child's behaviour over the festive period.
I'll explain more about the legend of Befana and where it comes from tomorrow morning but for now I'll leave you with a photo of some delicious chocolates on display at Bar Calise, no doubt destined for some lucky young nipper's stocking some time around midnight tomorrow.
Anyway, have a great day wherever you are and remember we're here if you need any help.
A domani!
