ISCHIA ON SUNDAY - THE WEEKLY ISCHIA BLOG: SUNDAY 7TH DECEMBER 2014
Welcome to our weekly Ischia blog, Ischia on Sunday. Here you can see the entry for Sunday 7th December 2014.
Ciao Ischia!
It's a slightly damp evening in Ischia after a full week of heavy rain showers and some frankly weird weather.
We're just a little past dusk here but out at sea there's some kind of light source creating a brindle-effect of bright and dark patches while in the distance, the island of Ventotene has finally faded from view after being on display for most of the afternoon.
For what I believe is the first time this winter, the central heating is on as we huddle-up to write the weekly blog.
After a blog-free weekend last week (sorry), we're back in Ischia from our annual holiday and all raring to go again. The batteries have been fully recharged and we've already been very busy, making lots of changes and improvements to the website which I'll explain a bit more about shortly. Since returning from holiday we've seen more rain than I can remember (which says a lot when you consider I'm English!), with virtually non-stop heavy downpours since Monday. It all looked quite promising as we stepped off the plane in Rome to be greeted by temperatures of 19° Celcius (66° Fahrenheit) but that appears to have been a false dawn with what has followed.
Looking ahead to next week there appears to be a bit of a shift away from the wet weather to drier and sunnier yet colder conditions but certainly nicer than getting soaked every time you leave the house! With the shorter winter days, the afternoon and evening temperatures tend to see a greater swing than in the summer and we should see around 13°C (55°F) as the average daily high and a chilly 5°C (41°F) as an average low.
So what are we going to do to keep warm? Well, that rather neatly brings me to the subject of our Ischia Christmas and New Year Events 2014 - 2015 programme that Silvana has put together this week. The list is extensive and includes the unlikely prospect of ice-skating in Ischia Porto as well as some of the uniquely traditional events over the festive season such as the "Presepe Vivente" (Live Nativity) which takes place in the village of Campagnano, the "Bosco Incantato" light display and all sorts of other lovely stuff such as "Santa Claus on a Bicycle" (this one caught me eye, I'm not sure what it is as it wasn't on last year but I have an image in my head of 1. a bicycle and 2. Santa Claus on said bicycle). Anyway, check out the programme if you're visiting over Christmas and the New Year as you should find it useful.
I mentioned that we've been making some improvements to the website and you may have noticed some of those already from the home page. We're very excited to launch our Ischia Review Forum, for years now we've been telling you what we think about Ischia but it's reached the point where we'd really like to make the site much more interactive and also hear your thoughts on the island based on your experiences or around a future holiday you may have planned. It's an open forum meaning you can raise new topics and talk about any subject you like. We really want to see restaurant and accommodation reviews in particular but we'd also like you to share any photos you may have or be able to answer your questions about travel, excursions and culture in general. There are lots of different ways to sign up to the forum and it's simple to use so please come and grace us with your presence!
If you cast your eyes just a few degrees lower (actually it's probably better just to scroll down a bit), then you'll find another new interactive feature that's been added to the site this week. From now on, at the end of every blog we'll be raising a poll/survey on a chosen Ischia-related subject. This week's poll asks which is your favourite beach on the island, we've listed what we think will be the main contenders but you can nominate any of the twenty or so main beaches in Ischia. I've chosen this week's photo of Maronti Beach to help you come up with your answer but you can also go to our beaches in Ischia page if you'd like to really consider your options first. So go on, let us know what you think and we'll be very grateful!
Ok that's all for this week, like I said we're back from holiday now and very much ready for your questions and queries so keep them all coming and we promise to answer every person that writes in. Anyway, back with more next Sunday.
A presto
