GOOD MORNING ISCHIA! SUNDAY 15TH DECEMBER 2013
Welcome to our Ischia blog, Good Morning Ischia! Here you can see the entry for Sunday 15th December 2013.
Good morning Ischia!
It's a slightly damp start to the day over here in Forio, it's not actually raining at the moment but garden is wet and there's water flowing through one of the gutters, leading me to deduce Sherlock Holmes style that we've had a bit of an overnight downpour. There's a sheet of grey cloud covering the island at the moment and visibility out to sea is low, but from what I can see it seems to be pretty calm out there. I can just about make out a distant oil-tanker as it flatly carves its way through the benign waves towards its destination.
The overhead conditions are somewhat at odds with some of the weather forecasts which are predicting a clear and sunny day but there's no better guide than simply looking out of the window sometimes. As far as temperatures go we should be looking at a maximum of around 15° Celcius (58° fahrenheit) and a minimum of 11°C (52°F), although we could be in for a bit of a drop over the next few days. I wouldn't quite put my money on a white Christmas in Ischia just yet though!
Today's photo was taken at La Mandra beach in Ischia Ponte with Castello Aragonese in the background. Of course the originally intended main subject was the castle but this very cute dog appeared stage right at the exact moment when it was taken and slightly stole the show.
The area around La Mandra is a great place to take a walk and there is much to see along the way. One suggested route you could take would be to walk from the castle in Ischia Ponte, along the coastal path towards Ischia Porto. With the castle behind you, walk through the main town area with its shops, bars and restaurants and head straight on up the slope to the top of the town where you see a road that leads right, towards the sea. After a couple of minutes you'll reach La Mandra beach on your right and the five star Miramare e Castello hotel on your left. From this point you can walk close to the sea for another 20 minutes or half an hour or so, passing Fisherman's beach and then Lido beach before ending up at San Pietro beach in Ischia Porto.
Of course at this time of year there's very little point in staying on the beach but you could have a very pleasant return journey by walking back from Via Roma and Corso Vittoria Colonna up to the skating-rink at Piazzetta San Girolamo. If you didn't fancy donning a pair of skates you could take a small detour up to the enchanted forest with its dazzling light displays and spooky sound effects. There are lots of stalls along the same road selling hot snacks and drinks so you could treat yourself to something sweet after all of your walking efforts before returning to your hotel or apartment.
Anyway, just a few suggestions for a nice stroll on a lazy Sunday afternoon. That's all from me today, I'll be back with more tomorrow morning.
A presto!
