Hello everyone. It's been a confusing day of weather in Ischia so far today with no particularly dominant feature. After some fairly heavy overnight rain, this morning started out damp before brightening up with some sunny spells before lunch. Then just as everything looked like it was going to stay nice there was a sudden shower out of nowhere which yours truly got caught in. Right now at 3:30pm it's a not so bad 12° Celsius (54° Fahrenheit), dry and with hardly a breath of wind. This is evening should be mostly clear with a few light clouds while the wind will pick up to around 13 knots per hour, a little way short of causing any sea-related travel disruption. That's all from me today, I'll leave you with a photo from Fishermen's Beach in Ischia Ponte, back tomorrow. Ciao :-)
Afternoon folks! It's all change on the weather front after yesterday's briefest of snow flurries. So far today we've had a bright, clear and sunny day with hardly a breath of wind making conditions out at sea rather better than they have been for the past week or so. Despite a cold start to the morning things have gradually warmed up and right now at 3:30pm we're up to 13° Celsius (55° Fahrenheit). That temperature will drop to a minimum around 6°C (43°F) this evening with conditions expected to remain clear and starry after sunset. Tomorrow looks like it might be a different story however with some rain expected to move in early in the morning. For now I'll leave you with today's photo which comes from the lighthouse in Ischia Porto. Back tomorrow. Ciao :-)
Afternoon everyone. Well the big news from Ischia today is that it's been snowing! I get to write that roughly once a year and it may not happen again for the rest of winter so it's worth mentioning. It's not exactly a picture postcard white blanket covering the island, more the wet, sleety-type that doesn't settle but what it does show is that it's officially cold. Right now at 2:45pm it's 5° Celsius (41° Fahrenheit), damp and quite overcast. The forecasters are saying it's going to clear up later and also get quite windy but there's really no sign of either thing happening at the moment with the sea looking nice and calm. One place where the snow regularly settles is the top of Mount Vesuvius which is today's photo. Ciao :-)
Afternoon folks. It's a beautiful day here in Ischia today, fresh and crisp with hardly a ripple out at sea or a cloud in the sky. It is nevertheless a bit cold, not quite as much as yesterday and without any wind chill factor. Right now at 3:15pm it is in fact 10° Celsius (50° Fahrenheit) but if you only had visuals to go by you'd probably guess that it was summer with a couple of yachts passing the bay as I write. Having said all that, temperatures are set to drop sharply this evening, perhaps even down as far as 4°C (39°F) which might come as a bit of a shock. A few days ago I mentioned some of the unseasonal flora and fauna that's started to bloom early and today's photo is one such example, the beautiful, aromatic Mimosa tree with its bright yellow buds. Back tomorrow anyway. Ciao :-)
Buona domenica everyone, I hope you're all enjoying a nice relaxing Sunday afternoon. We've had a much brighter day here in Ischia today, plenty of sunshine and with the wind not quite so significant as it's been over the past week or so. It's certainly feeling colder though and right now at 4:30pm it's 9° Celsius (48° Fahrenheit). It's still light but it won't be for much longer as the sun is making its way down, creating a background of light with some distant rain clouds in the foreground. Over the next few days we should be in for a spell of clear, bright weather but with temperatures falling away significantly. For now I'll leave you with this shot of Sant'Angelo from Maronti Beach. A domani. Ciao :-)
Afternoon folks. Saturday has brought a chill with it and the cold snap mentioned yesterday seems to be gathering some momentum. Things have been overcast for the last 24 hours or so with a few scattered showers but the temperature drop is the big change. Right now at 3pm it's 10° Celsius (50° Fahrenheit) and it's looking quite gloomy outside. Every now and then I can see distant silhouettes of downpours in the distance across the sea and we're supposedly in for a mini-storm right about now. The forecasters seem to have got the wind wrong though, it's not nearly as bad as they said it would be right now and the sea is much calmer than it was yesterday. Anyway for now I'll leave you with a much brighter scene for today's photo, the bay of La Scarrupata in Barano. Ciao :-)
Hi everyone. The weekend is almost upon us! Today has been mostly overcast with a few spots of rain interspersed with some sunny spells. It's been a day when I've had the heater on for much longer than usual which makes me think the temperature has dropped a bit but much to my surprise having just now checked at 4:15pm it's the same as it was this time yesterday, 12° Celsius (54° Fahrenheit). The cold feeling is more down to the wind though which is strong again today with the sea looking really choppy. The situation should remain like this for the rest of the evening and tomorrow but by Sunday we could be in for a cold snap with temperatures as low as 1°C predicted so perhaps I should save a bit of gas until then! Back with more tomorrow anyway. Ciao :-)
Afternoon folks. Today's update comes just as a beautiful phenomenon fills my view. With the sun about 2 inches above the water (using my finger and thumb as a guide), a little group of clouds has gathered around it which has created a corona effect with intermittent sunbeams shining down on to the sea. Quite stunning actually. In terms of the overall weather today it's been a mixture of cloudy with some sunny spells and a couple of very light showers. Right now at 4:45pm it's 12° Celsius (54° Fahrenheit), dry and the sea is much calmer than it's been for most of this week. This evening should be clear while tomorrow morning we're expecting a brief storm. Today's photo comes from our Succhivo Hillside Apartments near Sant'Angelo. Back tomorrow. Ciao :-
Afternoon everyone. The topsy-turvy, unpredictable and unseasonal weather continues in Ischia today. Again it just doesn't feel like winter, seeing people walking around in light clothing, heating not required and windows open, it's all a bit odd. It's been mostly sunny today but the prevailing feature is the strong wind that's been causing some travel issues with various hydrofoil services either cancelled or delayed. It hasn't rained yet though. Things have cooled down a bit as the day has worn on and right now at 4:45pm it's 12° Celsius (54° Fahrenheit), dry but with a tiny threat of rain. This evening should be clear and tomorrow should see a mixture of cloud, sunshine and wind. Today's photo was taken in Ischia Porto this morning and I'll be back tomorrow. Ciao :-)
Hello everyone. Strange things are afoot on the island of Ischia as I suspect they are in many other places across the world right now. Call it climate change or simply "the weather" (if you share Donald Trump's views), but it really doesn't feel like winter at the moment. Again it's been a warm day apart from the strong winds but to be sitting here with all the windows open on the 10th of January is a bit odd. Not only that, we've got all sorts of things blooming that shouldn't be yet like the Ginestra (a type of gorse) and the Bougainvilleas with their bright violet flowers. Anyway right now at 5:30pm it's 15° Celsius (59° Fahrenheit) and an ugly black cloud has just come into my view stage left, seemingly ready to unleash something quite nasty so time to take cover! A domani. Ciao :-)
