Afternoon folks. Well if yesterday was glorious then I'm stuck for superlatives to describe today. Yesterday was the first time in a long time that we'd had some real warm weather and was quite a jump from the temperatures of the preceding days but today we've gone from one day of spring straight into summer! Right now at 4:45pm it's a beautiful 24° Celsius (75° Fahrenheit) and comfortably the hottest day of the year so far. Making this even better is the fact that there's a stiff breeze which means it's not so hot that you don't have any energy. Driving past Chiaia Beach in Forio earlier I noticed there were a lot of people sunbathing and one or two even taking a tentative dip. More of the same expected for tomorrow as well when I'll be back with another update. Ciao :-)
Afternoon folks. It's an absolutely glorious day in Ischia today! The sun is out, the sea is calm and the only noise that can be heard is the occasional squawking of some peacocks (I have to admit I have no idea where they are coming from though!). If you were to read the current weather forecast it would tell you it's raining right now but I can assure you there's nothing but blue sky and warm sunshine. It's also considerably warmer than was predicted and right now at 3pm it's 20° Celsius (68° Fahrenheit). The current conditions should be repeated for at least the following week and with all the spring flowers starting to emerge it really is a wonderful time to be on the island. Today's photo shows a pedalo on Maronti Beach in Barano and I'll be back tomorrow. Ciao :-)
Evening everyone. We're getting towards the end of a slightly disappointing day in terms of the weather. The forecasts said there would be a good deal of sunshine with partial cloud but it was more the other way around with just a few sunny intervals throughout the day. With the clocks having gone forward over the weekend the days are really feeling longer now and at 7pm the sun still has some way to go before it sets. The current temperature is 15° Celsius (59° Fahrenheit) and that should be the maximum temperature tomorrow which promises to be sunnier than today. Then from Thursday it seems as if the warmer spring temperatures are set to arrive with a maximum of 20°C (68°F). Today's photo comes from La Mandra Beach in Ischia Ponte and I'll be back tomorrow. Ciao :-)
Afternoon folks. In Ischia and Italy, today is known as "Pasquetta", a particularly busy time on the island with many people having sailed across from the mainland for the weekend. In terms of the weather it's not been a great start to the day with lots of cloud around and some showers too. It has just brightened up momentarily though and right now at 1:45pm the temperature is 15° Celsius (59° Fahrenheit). There will be some further cloudy spells this afternoon before clearing to leave much nicer conditions for tomorrow and the rest of this week with temperatures set to rise above 20°C (68°F) from Thursday onwards. Today's photo comes from the beautiful "La Corricella" on the neighbouring island of Procida, just a short hop from Ischia. Back tomorrow. Ciao :-)
Happy Easter everyone, buona pasqua a tutti! I realise my seasonal greetings are at least half a day late but no less heartfelt. This afternoon saw one of the most joyous events of the year take place on the streets of Forio. La Corsa dell'Angelo is a ceremony performed every Easter Sunday and brings the whole town together with people dressed up for the occasion and offering friends and family "tanti auguri" (kind of best wishes). It helps to mark the beginning of spring which is more important here than in many other places as for many people it means going back to work for the next 6 months or so. In terms of the weather it's been a nice, sunny day with temperatures of 15° Celsius (59° Fahrenheit) this afternoon. Back with another update tomorrow. Ciao :-)
Afternoon folks, the Easter weekend continues although we didn't get off to the best start weather-wise this morning. Until around 10am it was cloudy and damp with some showers around but since then it's steadily brightened up and we now have a gorgeous spring afternoon. The temperature right now at 2:30pm is 17° Celsius (63° Fahrenheit) and tomorrow should be a very similar story. Today's photo shows some of the traditional Easter food in Ischia, there are of course Easter eggs but something else called La Colomba which is very similar to the Panettone cake that's eaten at Christmas, but in the shape of a dove ("colomba" means dove in Italian). Don't forget, the clocks go forward tonight/early hours of tomorrow and I'll be back with another update tomorrow. Ciao :-)
Afternoon everyone, I hope you're all having a good, Good Friday. The Easter weekend has got off to a great start in Ischia with a beautiful sunny day replacing the damp and gloom from the earlier part of this week. Not only is it bright and sunny but the visibility is so good that you can easily see the island of Ventotene in the distance which is just over 40km away. This evening there's one of the big events of the year taking place in Forio, The Passion of Christ is brilliantly performed and starts around 19:00 this evening, to be played out all around the streets of Forio which is sure to be really busy. Right now at 4pm it's 16° Celsius (61° Fahrenheit) with tomorrow and Sunday expected to see very similar conditions. I'll be back with more tomorrow. Ciao :-)
Morning folks. The summer season is almost upon us with the Easter weekend the typical starting point each year. Good Friday sees one of the most important events on the calendar in Forio with the Actus Tragicus, a recreation of the Passion of Christ which gets played out on the town's streets and is a must-see if you're on the island at this time. Another sign of the island coming back to life is the opening of La Mortella Gardens, also in Forio, this Saturday after their winter hibernation. Weather-wise we're in for a bit of cloud today and the temperature right now at 8:30am is 11° Celsius (52° Fahrenheit), rising to a maximum of 14°C (57°F) this afternoon. Things are looking brighter for the weekend though, particularly tomorrow which should be sunny all day. Ciao :-)
Morning everyone. It's an early update from me today and it's been a really positive start to the day. This rise in temperature continued last night which was unusually warm and things have stayed steady into this morning. Right now at 8:15am it's already 16° Celsius (61° Fahrenheit) and that should again reach the 20°C mark later this afternoon. Although it's sunny right now and the sea is nice and calm, there is some cloud expected later along with some pretty heavy winds of up to 21 knots (40kph). Those winds are set to continue into tomorrow morning as well so there may be some disruption with ferries and hydrofoils if that proves to be the case. Further rain is expected on Thursday before things brighten up just in time for the Easter weekend on Friday. Back tomorrow. Ciao :-)
Afternoon folks. Perfectly timed to coincide with the official beginning of spring, there's been a real change in the weather over the last few days and today is warmer still than yesterday. The air feels different now and it's great to be able to sit with all the windows and doors open to let it all in. Right now at 3:30pm it's 22° Celsius (72° Fahrenheit), a significant jump on what we've had so far this year. This isn't yet quite a permanent change however, tomorrow looks like it should be similar to today but Wednesday and Thursday are forecast to rain with maximum temperatures dropping significantly until we get past Easter when they should rise again (ironically enough). For today's photo I've chosen a shot of Citara Beach in Forio and I'll be back again tomorrow. Ciao :-)
